What will happen if……

Kay Philp

I am Kay and I am a maker! I have always made things – sewing, knitting, crocheting, cooking, book design, sculptured dolls, photography. I will give anything a go. And then, about 30 years ago, I discovered painting. This has evolved, as things do, and I tried acrylics, oils, pens, pencils, crayons in many different styles. I loved them all. But eventually I started to focus on watercolours and ink.

During the pandemic I decided that I would like to learn how to draw faces and committed to 100 faces in 100 days. I never knew who was going to show up on the page each day but someone always emerged from my pen and ink washes and my watercolour palette.
I have painted more than 300 faces since then and learnt so much about technique and style.

More recently my focus has started to change and I find myself drawn to botanical art. As I live on 5 acres in the hills just north of Samford I am embedded in the natural world and it common for me to spend my days trying to mix the infinite combination of greens that I see from my window.

Today I make art every day and have the privilege of working in my own studio. Life is good.

The Experience

Look at the world through the eyes of an artist:

My work is primarily watercolour and ink in expressionistic style but I will try anything that makes my heart sing. So I would call myself a mixed media artist.
My motivation comes from a curiosity about what will happen if…… and I consider myself a lifelong learner.

Experimentation and exploration is the spice to life, try something new.
